"The Concert"
A "must see" film that, until now, has not made it to the big screen in Vancouver, although it was nominated in 2011 for the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film and was selected for the 2012 Vancouver Jewish Film Festival.

Admission is $10 per person.  Popcorn and drinks will be available.

Written and directed by Radu Mihaileanu, this is a delightful, funny, and uplifting tale about never giving up your dreams and the power of music.

It doesn't matter if you think you don't like classical music, it's all about the journey -- and yet the climax concert is worth the price of admission: a superb Tchaikovsky concerto performed unrehearsed by a hilarious, rag tag bunch of musicians posing as the famed Bolshoi Theatre Orchestra.  The mastermind conductor of "The Concert" is Andrei Filipov, who was fired at the height of his career for defending his Jewish performers and is now a janitor at the Bolshoi concert hall!

This historic detail from the Brezhvev regime provides a resonant back story, bringing the orchestra together with a young Parisian violinist, Anne-Marie Jacquet, who yearns only for the watchful eyes of her parents, thinking they died in an accident.

The acclaimed French actress, and director, Melanie Laurent, playing the solo violinist, is best known in North America for her performance in the movie "Inglorious Basterds" and in the French film "La Rafle" about the round up of the Jewish population in Paris in 1942.
